
On April 14, the Urology Department team led by Professor Yang Jie at Jiangsu Cancer Hospital (Jiangsu Cancer Center) successfully completed the world's first single-port robot-assisted laparoscopic renal artery aneurysm resection with renal artery reconstruction.
The patient, a 51-year-old woman (surname Wang), had been experiencing dull right-sided flank pain and hypertension for over two years. Her symptoms had recently progressively worsened, and she felt pronounced throbbing in her lower back during sleep. Examinations revealed a right renal artery aneurysm approximately 2 cm in diameter, located at a primary branch of the main renal artery. A renal artery aneurysm, if ruptured, can lead to massive hemorrhage in a short time, becoming life-threatening. After consulting several hospitals, Ms. Wang came to the Urology Department of Jiangsu Cancer Hospital for treatment.
Following a multidisciplinary team consultation, Professor Yang Jie's team decided to employ the most advanced single-port robot-assisted technology currently available. The surgery was performed through a single tiny incision approximately 3 cm long, utilizing specialized instruments to complete all procedures. Under the nearly 10x magnified view provided by the robotic system, Professor Yang Jie's team precisely and completely resected the right renal artery aneurysm and, applying superb microsuturing techniques, successfully performed renal artery reconstruction. Intraoperative blood loss was only 10 ml, and the kidney was successfully preserved while removing the vascular "bomb."
"Dissection within the renal hilum is considered a no-go zone in kidney surgery. Bleeding from a small vessel can often be very difficult to control and may necessitate the removal of the entire kidney," stated Professor Song Ninghong, President of Jiangsu Cancer Hospital. "The domestically produced single-port snake-arm robot provided the optimal hardware support for this patient's successful surgery. Our hospital pursues not only the removal of the lesion but, more importantly, the preservation of organ function and the protection of the patient's long-term quality of life."
According to reports, this team has recently utilized domestically produced robotic equipment to complete a series of landmark procedures, including the "world's first remote single-port robotic renal tumor enucleation," the "world's first remote single-port robotic radical prostatectomy," and "single-surgeon single-port laparoscopic surgery for entire urinary tract tumors." The success of this surgery once again demonstrates the team's leading position in the field of ultra-minimally invasive urological technology.
