
On the morning of March 11, 2026, a landmark clinical trial commenced simultaneously at the Jiangjiayuan Campus and the Maigaoqiao Campus of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University – the "Single-Center, Multi-Campus 5G Remote Surgery Using a Single-Port Surgical Robot" project was officially launched. This represents not only a major technological breakthrough but also a substantial leap forward in the hospital's practice of its "patient-centered" service philosophy, promoting the homogenization of high-quality medical resources, and addressing the pain points of patients having to travel between different campuses for care.
The launch ceremony featured speeches by Gu Min, Member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nanjing Medical University, as well as Party Secretary of the Second Affiliated Hospital and the Second Clinical Medical College. Professor Zhu Qingyi, Vice President of the Second Affiliated Hospital and Director of the Urinary Disease Center, performed the cross-campus 5G remote single-port robot-assisted laparoscopic resection of an adrenal pheochromocytoma as the lead surgeon. Professor Shao Yunpeng, Deputy Director of the Propaganda and United Front Work Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, presided over the conference.
01 Technological Innovation: Remote Operation Across Campuses – Surgery Has Never Been So "Precise" and "Efficient"
This project aims to integrate the domestically developed Shurui single-port surgical robotic system with 5G communication technology to achieve remote, minimally invasive robotic surgery across different hospital campuses.
Cutting-Edge Equipment: "Hand and Eye Reach Heaven"
The Shurui single-port surgical robot is a completely independently innovated medical device in China. Its core technology, the "deformable coupled continuum mechanism", overcomes the limitations of traditional rigid instruments,enabling flexible instrument movement through a single minimally invasive incision. This means more precise surgical manipulation, less trauma, faster postoperative recovery, and improved cosmetic results. For this project, modules specifically designed for remote surgery have been integrated.
5G Network: The "Neural Hub"
The key to successful remote surgery lies in the network. 5G technology, with its ultra-low latency (1-10 milliseconds), high transmission rates (100 Mbps – 20 Gbps), and high stability, provides a solid guarantee for real-time command transmission and high-definition video feedback during remote surgery. The system monitors key network metrics such as round-trip latency and packet loss in real-time, with automatic alerts for abnormalities, creating a robust safety barrier.
02 Core Advantages: Reshaping the Healthcare Landscape, Bringing High-Quality Resources "Actively" to Patients
For a long time, experts with cutting-edge skills have often been concentrated at central campuses. Patients at other campuses in need of expert surgery frequently have to travel between districts or campuses, which is time-consuming and laborious, increasing both the cost and the physical and mental burden of seeking care. This project aims to fundamentally change this situation.
Breaking Down Spatial Barriers
Leveraging this technology, an expert at the Jiangjiayuan Campus can directly control a robot placed in the operating room of the Maigaoqiao Campus to perform surgery on a patient. Preliminary validation shows that remote operation within a 10-kilometer range is technically feasible. In the future, the hospital plans to establish a centralized robotic control center, allowing experts to perform surgeries across more campuses remotely without needing to physically travel.
